I would like to challenge Local 2002 members to support the Dignity for All campaign, co-founded by Canada without Poverty and Citizens for Public Justice. In these volatile economic times, poverty is something all CAW members should be concerned with; the state of poverty and the lack of a federal anti-poverty plan in Canada could affect them, their co-workers and family at any time.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states:
"all human beings are born free and equal in dignity of rights."
People living in poverty are typically victims of discrimination on grounds such as birth, property, national and social origin, race, colour, gender and religion. A 2008 study says that nearly half of Canadians admit they struggle to keep their personal debt under control. Between 2002 and 2007, eleven per cent of children in Canada lived in poverty for 4-6 years.
Social issues are union issues. Discrimination is contrary to our Unions’ principle of solidarity. It is time to mobilize and let our voice be heard.
